My First Record - A Hip-Hop Revelation
I'll never forget the day I bought my first vinyl record.

I'll never forget the day I bought my first vinyl record. I was 13, and I saved my money from a paper route my brother and I had. The vinyl was UTFO's self-titled debut at Sam Goody's (I know I'm dating myself!). I didn't have a record player yet, but I knew I had to have it.
The UTFO Experience
For those unfamiliar, UTFO (Untouchable Force Organization) burst onto the hip-hop scene in 1984. The Brooklyn quartet—consisting of Kangol Kid, Doctor Ice, Educated Rapper, and Mix Master Ice—delivered what would become one of hip-hop's most influential early releases.
The LP featured their breakout hit "Roxanne, Roxanne," which not only dominated radio but sparked the famous "Roxanne Wars"—a series of answer records that became one of hip-hop's first major beefs! The track's narrative about a woman who wouldn't respond to their advances might seem dated now, but the infectious beat produced by Full Force was undeniable.
Fun Facts About UTFO:
Before music, they were actually known as the "Keystone Dancers" and performed as backup dancers for the legendary rap group Whodini.
"Roxanne, Roxanne" triggered over 30 response records, including the famous "Roxanne's Revenge" by Roxanne Shanté
The group's name "Untouchable Force Organization" reflected their background in breakdancing and their confidence in their skills
Kangol Kid was known for always wearing his signature Kangol hat, which became part of his identity
This album became the cornerstone of my collection and sparked my lifelong love for vinyl. The crackling sound when the needle first hits the groove, the large-format album art you can actually appreciate, and the intentional listening experience of flipping sides—there's nothing like it.
The Vinyl Connection
There's something so special about the first record that calls to you. It's not just music – it's a memory, a moment, a piece of your story. For me, that UTFO record represents not just great music, but the beginning of understanding the importance of curation and collection.
What was YOUR first record? Tell me about it in the comments – I'd love to hear what started your vinyl journey! Was it a gift? A random discovery? Something you saved up for like I did? What emotions does it bring back when you think about it now? 💿
P.S. Swipe to see a pic of that very first record (and yes, I still have it after all these years!). Notice the wear on the sleeve—each scratch tells a story of countless plays and teenage enthusiasm.
P.P.S. This weekend we're having a "First Vinyl" discount—Drop a picture of your first record and get 15% off your purchase. Let's celebrate where our vinyl journeys began!
